Heirloom Bloody Mary

A glass of Bloody Mary garnished with diced vegetables and a celery stick, placed on a kitchen counter with a cutting board and ice jar in the background.

To be honest with you I have never been a huge fan of the Bloody Mary but I loved the look of it so I started experimenting with the drink and I finally came up with one that I love!!

I have made it for many people and either you love this one or you hate it.

  • 2 oz Absolut Pepper Vodka
  • 4 oz of fresh heirloom tomato juice
  • 2 oz of organic bottled tomato juice
  • 1 teaspoon fresh horseradish
  • 1 + teaspoon of balsamic vinaigrette
  • 2 drops Tabasco
  • 1 + teaspoon of Worcestershire Sauce
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • Juice of ½ a lemon
  • Juice of ½ a lime
  • chopped red onion, celery & (red) jalapenos
  • a highball glass
  • a cocktail shaker
  • ice cubes
  • grater
  • Fill a 9-ounce highball glass with ice
  • Pour the vodka over the ice
  • Add all the other ingredients
  • Dump the contents of the glass into a shaker
  • Shake
  • Pour the chilled mixture back into the glass
  • Top it off with chopped red onion, celery and (red) jalapenos
  • The proportions are key. “You can’t throw a bunch of stuff in a glass and expect it to be the same every time. You really have to look at the drink as a recipe and take the time to do it right.
During tomato season, use the best ripe tomatoes you can find. Out of season (during winter and spring) use Roma tomatoes.
If you don’t have the time and energy to make the fresh tomato juice, It is OK to only use bottled or canned tomato juice. Just be sure to use juice that isn’t mucked up with a lot of sugar or salt.
