Mango Lassi

A glass of freshly blended mango smoothie on a kitchen counter with a blender and a ripe mango in the background.

The lassi is a traditional drink in India that orginaly hails from the Punjab region in north. It is typically made by blending yogurt with water, spices and salt into a light frothy beverage.

This mango lassi recipe is the equivalent of the fatter American cousin. I find that it provides the perfect cool taste to balance the powerful spice of a fine Indian dinner. It is also a delicious drink to cool you off on a hot day.

Serves: 5-6 6oz drinks

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 cup chopped mango (skinned and stoned)
  • 3-4 Tbsp brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • ⅛ tsp or less cardamom powder (a small pinch)
  • dash fresh lemon juice
  • Ice

  • Blender

  • Remove the skin and stone from the mango and roughly chop the sweet flesh.
  • Add all ingredients to blender and blend until creamy.
  • Serve cold and enjoy

With the average mango from Peru that is available here in LA, I get about 1 ½ cups from each mango.
Use white sugar for a lighter sweeter taste.
Consider substituting lemon, strawberry or rosewater for the mango to create a nice variation.
