Mexican Caesar Cocktail

Bloody Mary cocktail garnished with celery stick and lime wedge, served in a salt-rimmed glass on a granite countertop.

I’m a big fan of the Caesar, but being from Southern California I couldn’t resist substituting tequila for vodka. Et tu Brute? Not that I loved vodka less, but I loved tequilla more.

The clam juice elevates the complexity of this drink much in the way anchovies can mysteriously add to a pasta sauce. You don’t actually taste the clam juice. You just get a hint of the sea. And adding that bit of horseradish amplifies the effect.

Caesar may not have been Mexican, but he would have been proud to have such an auspicious pick me up named in his honor.

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 4 oz clamato juice
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • Splash of Worcestershire
  • Pinch of fresh horseradish
  • Tabasco (to taste)
  • Celery salt (to taste)
  • Pint glass
  • Collins glass
  • Place all of the ingredients in the pint glass with ice
  • Pour (or “throw”) it all into your collins glass
  • Repeat steps 1 and 2 (this is a good way to mix heavy drinks like this one)
