Mushy orange and grapefruit

Refreshing grapefruit and orange granita served in a white bowl with a blender and fresh citrus fruits in the background.

I was reminiscing with my family recently recalling tastes from our childhood. It still amazes me how my mother managed to feed us so well given that there were five of us each with voracious appetites.

We take for granted now how just about anything we want is available all year round. Back then, it was seasonal. So when oranges and grapefruits were in the stores, my mother made sure we had them. But they were expensive and so they were rationed.

This recipe, I realize now, was her way of making the fruit go further. It remains a taste of my childhood that brings memories flooding back each time I eat it.

Now, of course, I imagine something like this would be fancied up and used in the way we use sorbets between courses (to clean the palate). But, in its purest form, it is fun for children to prepare and tastes absolutely yummy!
