Sangrita

This is a traditional chaser for tequila. Sangrita literally means, “little blood”. This recipe makes about 1 quart.

  • 2 ½ lbs tomatoes
  • 4 oranges; the juice of
  • 1 lemon; the juice of
  • 2 limes ; the juice of
  • 3 limes, cut into wedges
  • 5 hot green chilies or chili powder (about 4-5 Tbsp for a spicy, hot drink)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Tabasco or favorite hot sauce
  • Salt to taste or serve on side
  • Large pot
  • Food processor
  • Strainer
  • Pitcher
  • Parboil tomatoes; peel them.
  • Place in food processor along with citrus juices, chilis or chili powder, onion, and sugar.
  • Puree.
  • Add Tabasco to taste.
  • Chill until cold. Strain into pitcher.
  • Serve in shot glass along with tequila, in shot glass, salt, and lime wedges.
  • If you don’t have time to make this from scratch, use canned tomato juice and add rest of ingredients.
