White Trash Toffee

Plate of homemade chocolate toffee bars topped with chopped nuts on a kitchen counter, ready for serving.

I can’t even begin to imagine how this recipe began but butter, sugar, chocolate? I’m in! With its salty sweet goodness, this is a major crowd pleaser.

  • 40 saltine crackers
  • 1 cup of light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 1 12 oz bag of semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 small handful of plain roasted almonds (roughly chopped)
  • 1 large rimmed baking sheet, lined with easy release aluminum foil
  • 1 medium size saucepan
  • Heat oven to 400°F
  • 1 spatula or offset spatula or even just a knife to spread the melted chocolate
  • Place the saltines next to each other on the baking sheet
  • In the saucepan bring the butter and sugar just to a boil and cook for about 3 minutes, until thicker, but not until it becomes caramel
  • Pour over saltines and place in oven for about 3 mins. It will be very bubbly when it comes out
  • Sprinkle the chocolate chips all over the saltine mess and place back in the oven for 1 minute
  • Take out of the oven and spread the chocolate evenly over the saltines
  • Sprinkle lightly with chopped almonds
  • Place cookie sheet in freezer for about an hour to set
  • Break into pieces
  • Stores great in the freezer. Serving frozen is good too – or any way you like.
