Baking powder

A leavening agent that consists of two parts bicarbonate of soda and one part cream of tartar mixed with a starch such as flour. Commonly used in baking, baking powder was invented in America in the 1840’s and mass-produced by the Germans in the 1890’s.

As a general rule of thumb 1teaspoon of baking powder is used to raise one cup of flour.
