Santa Monica Farmers’ Market

Grub nirvana is an apt description of the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. This bustling market is filled with fresh seasonal produce only from California farms. A grubster will never go wanting for inspiration at this California Certified Farmers’ Market.

The market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Wednesday market is the larger of the two (with an average of 9,000 guests a week), but both feature a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, herbs and spices. If you go early in the day when the farmers are still setting up, you will spot numerous Los Angeles area chefs making their orders. Since rules prevent purchases prior to opening, they only place their orders and send their assistants later to fetch the goods. Shoppers need not be concerned by chefs cherry picking the best produce — abundance is never an issue.

The Saturday market was established May 1991 and has a large number of merchants — about 60% — who have made a commitment to selling certified organic foods.
