“Naked”
Santa Barbara Chardonnay 2006
Visual: Light yellow
Nose: Tropical fruit and melon, with hints of fennel, as well as a hint of nuttiness and minerals and lemon
Mouth: Very dry, bright, and medium bodied, possessing notes of tart green apples (and accompanying acidity!), very lively, clean, with a light candy finish.
Overall impression: Everyone loved the clean fruit flavors, and bright elegance of this unoaked Chardonnay!
Stats: No oak; 28,000 cases; sourced from vineyards in Cat Canyon; $12; My score: 88
Usually I go for the old fashioned California style “big oak” chards, but this “naked” oak really caught my attention — so much so that I mistook this Chardonnay for a much more expensive label..
This is one bottle I will be buying in the very near future.
