Meyer lemons are a sweet cross-breed of lemon and Mandarin orange. They are extremely fragrant. Native to China they were brought to the United States in 1908 by the agricultural explorer Frank Nicholas Meyer who an employee of the United States Department of Agriculture. By the 1940’s they had become widely popular in California.
The combination of sweet and tart flavor makes the Meyer lemon well suited for dessert and cocktail recipes.
