My daughter likes eating corn off the cob, one kernel at a time. Is it best to remove the kernels before cooking or after?

Also, does anyone have any good techniques for getting those little nuggets off it’s husk? I use a sharp knife, run down the side of the corn. But this seems to leave a fair bit on the cob (or, sometimes, goes too deep). Taking each kernel off by hand is not really an option… it just takes too long for me!
