OK, can someone please provide a definitive definition of petits four.

The name “petit four” is French for “little oven”. The French bakers, never being about waste, made these small layer cakes to use up small leftover remnants. Petits fours glacé is most common. These small cakes are usually covered with cooked icing called fondant and decorated.
