Design-your-own cookies

This recipe is so much fun! Every one enjoys them and marvels at how it could be done. The magic in this recipe is you can make almost any design your imagination lets you.

For this year’s Halloween, I served little spiders sitting on top of cobwebs alongside scary ghosts. The kids loved seeing and eating them. (Yes, the attached photo is all cookies!)

One note: You have to move fast once these cookies are poured and cooking. Depending on how intricate your design is, they can be time consuming but worth it!

Ready

  • ¾ cup flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup oil
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • Oil for skillet
  • Powdered sugar

Set

  • Squeeze bottle with small opening
  • Large skillet (aluminum is best)
  • Very thin Spatula (I use a metal one)
  • A great imagination

Go

  1. Combine all ingredients and mix well.
  2. Pour batter into the squeeze bottle.
  3. Heat skillet, medium to medium-low heat, and grease lightly.
  4. Using the squeeze bottle, ‘draw’ your design on the skillet.
  5. Cook 30-60 seconds till brown, then turn over for another 20-30 seconds.
  6. Remove from heat to paper towels or cookie sheet to cool. Optional: Sprinkle with powdered sugar, cocoa, color sugar sprinkles, or whatever you can dream up!
  7. Store loosely covered to maintain crunchiness.

What you should know

  • HOT TIP: If your skillet is heated just right the batter will sort of ‘sizzle’ as you pour and the dough will start to cook immediately. This helps in keeping your design shape.

  • Try coloring the batter for the occasion. Other ideas for shapes: snowflakes, candy canes, ‘Happy Birthday’, hearts with arrows, … let your imagination go wild. Enjoy!

  • For the leaf photos above, I colored the batter orange. The multi-colored effect involved pouring the leaf outline, letting it cook a little, then filling it in. Cool!

Re: Design-your-own cookies

This looks like a lot of fun and I bet it would be a great recipe to do with the kids. That is if you like abstract art.

And I love the GreatGrub writing!
