Sour Margarita

This sour margarita recipe is simple and delicious. Provided you can remember 1-1-1 it is also easy to prepare. The key is using triple sec liqueur which provides just the right amount of sweetness.

Be warned — it goes down easy.

Ready

  • 1 part fresh lime juice
  • 1 part tequila
  • 1 triple sec orange liqueur
  • ice
  • Slice of lime (optional)

Set

  • Cocktail shaker
  • juicer (preferred)

Go

  1. Mix equal parts tequila, lime juice and triple sec into a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add ice.
  3. Shake.
  4. Serve on the rocks.

What you should know

I recommend pouring two ounce of each ingredient for each person being served. For 2 people you will pour 2 ounces tequila, 2 ounces fresh lime juice and two ounces of triple sec.

Although cointreau is considered by many to be a superior liqueur to triple sec, it does not work as well with this recipe. If you want to use cointreau try one of these great recipes which are balanced for the appropriate proportions:

Re: Sour Margarita

Don’t be fooled by the sour name. The triple sec brings just the right amount of sweetness.

Re: Sour Margarita

After years of experimenting I have settled on this recipe as the best margarita recipe for dinner parties. It is quick and easy to prepare in large quantities. Just be careful not to leave a lot of ice melting into the unserved pitcher.

Re: Sour Margarita

I made a pitcher for our dinner party this weekend. And then I made another. Your margarita recipe was a huge hit. Best of all it is cheaper than the cointreau version and my guests liked this more. Perfect for parties!

Re: Sour Margarita

What kind of tequila do you recommend?

Re: Sour Margarita

There are a number of fine tequilas on the market. For this recipe I recommend using a Silver tequila. If you want to go fancy use Patron. If that is out of your budget you should have no trouble finding a quality tequila starting at about $20 a bottle. Ask you salesman what their favorite is.

Re: Sour Margarita

Sauza Silver is my favorite tequila for making margaritas. It is reasonable priced and nice and smooth.

Re: Sour Margarita
I noticed that you don't salt the glass. Why?
Re: Sour Margarita

Two reasons. It is my belief that when you use quality ingredients you don’t need to mask the taste with salt. There are many fine tequilas to choose from and if you use the fresh lime juice and the triple sec you are making a first class cocktail. No need for salt.

Also, I get enough sodium in my diet and I don’t need any excess.

I hope you enjoy the recipe.

What a great margarita recipe. It is anything thing but sour. We made it for our dinner party last night and both the margarita and the party were a huge hit.

This is one of the simplest recipe I ever seen in my life with the delicious taste. Loved it.
