White Trash Toffee
I can’t even begin to imagine how this recipe began but butter, sugar, chocolate? I’m in! With its salty sweet goodness, this is a major crowd pleaser.
Ready
- 40 saltine crackers
- 1 cup of light brown sugar (packed)
- 1 cup of butter
- 1 12 oz bag of semi sweet chocolate chips
- 1 small handful of plain roasted almonds (roughly chopped)
Set
- 1 large rimmed baking sheet, lined with easy release aluminum foil
- 1 medium size saucepan
- Heat oven to 400°F
- 1 spatula or offset spatula or even just a knife to spread the melted chocolate
Go
- Place the saltines next to each other on the baking sheet
- In the saucepan bring the butter and sugar just to a boil and cook for about 3 minutes, until thicker, but not until it becomes caramel
- Pour over saltines and place in oven for about 3 mins. It will be very bubbly when it comes out
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips all over the saltine mess and place back in the oven for 1 minute
- Take out of the oven and spread the chocolate evenly over the saltines
- Sprinkle lightly with chopped almonds
- Place cookie sheet in freezer for about an hour to set
- Break into pieces
What you should know
Stores great in the freezer. Serving frozen is good too - or any way you like.
Sounds like it will go perfectly with a champagne-chambord cocktail.
What are saltine crackers? Don’t think we have them in the UK.
This is amazing stuff. I ate 6 pieces in half an hour and could have shamelessly eaten the whole plate.
